It’s been so lovely to see the sun out these last few weeks – so it’s the perfect time to share these 4 healthy ice lolly recipes for babies & toddlers! One thing many parents worry about in the heat is keeping their babies and toddlers cool & hydrated, especially in these very high temperatures we’re not used to. Homemade ice lollies can be a great way of not only keeping children cool but getting those nutrients in too.
So, I have created not one, but FOUR ice lolly recipes for your little ones to enjoy – variety is key after all! These ice lollies are aimed at slightly older babies and toddlers who are confident with firmer textures. There are plenty of ice lolly moulds on the market ranging from mini baby ones to your regular-sized ice lolly.
All these recipes can be made vegan and dairy-free. If making your ice lollies with dairy-free alternatives make sure you go for an unsweetened, fortified milk alternative and yoghurt alternative so your child is not missing out on the nutrients naturally found in dairy products such as calcium, iodine and b12.
In this blog I have a milk lolly recipe, 2 smoothie recipes and an avocado lolly recipe (taken from my book How to feed your toddler). If you don’t have any of the fruits listed in the recipes, simply experiment with what you have at home. If you can’t find coconut cream, you can also use coconut milk which works just as well.
1. Milky Coconut Lollies
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons of coconut cream
- 5 tablespoons plain/fortified plant-based plain yoghurt
- 50ml fortified coconut milk/full-fat milk/breast milk
- Fruit of choice to decorate. We used some slices of strawberries and some passionfruit seeds
Method:
- Mix or blend the first three ingredients together
- Spoon the fruit into the ice lolly moulds
- Pour the blended ingredients into the ice lolly moulds
- Freeze overnight or for at least 8 hours

2. Strawberry Smoothie lollies
Ingredients
- Around 15 strawberries (mashed)
- 6 tablespoons plain/fortified plant-based plain yoghurt
- 2 tablespoons coconut cream
Method
- Mix or blend all the ingredients together
- Pour into ice lolly moulds
- Freeze overnight or for at least 8 hours

3. Banana smoothie lollies
Ingredients
- 1 banana (mashed)
- 6 tablespoons plain/fortified plant-based plain yoghurt
- 2 tablespoons coconut cream
Method
- Mix or blend all the ingredients together
- Pour into ice lolly moulds
- Freeze overnight or for at least 8 hours

4. Avocado lollies
Ingredients
- 1 large ripe avocado, stoned and peeled
- 1 ripe banana, peeled
- 4 tablespoons apple juice (or water)
- Grated zest of 1 lime and juice of ½
- 150g Greek yoghurt or coconut yoghurt (or fortified plant-based yoghurt)
- 100ml milk of choice
- 1-2 tablespoons milled seeds and nuts (optional), to serve
Method
- Roughly cut up the avocado flesh and banana and add to a blender along with the apple juice (or water) and lime zest and juice. Blend until smooth, then add the yoghurt and whizz again until it is all combined.
- Add the milk and whizz again.
- Pour the mixture into the lolly moulds and freeze overnight or until fully frozen.
- Serve as they are or dunk into a little extra yoghurt and the milled seeds and nuts.

I hope your little ones enjoy these lollies as much as mine do. I also have a recipe created by Dr Pippa Gibson for pineapple, lime and coconut lollies so do check that out too.
