This Apple and Forest Fruits Marzipan Crumble recipe is a super cosy, family friendly crumble that’s perfect for those colder months. This recipe mixes grated apple with frozen forest fruits for an easy and affordable pudding you can make all year round. This recipe is taken from my book How to Feed Your Family – which offers family friendly recipes which have adaptations for little ones – and can be made with or without added sugar or marzipan, making it suitable for babies, toddlers and the whole family. For older children and adults or for dinner parties, I love to add the optional small amount of sugar and little shavings of marzipan to this recipe for a bit of a novelty and a sweeter, more festive version.
This recipe also makes a double batch of crumble topping so you have extra ready in the freezer for another day which can be a real help on busy evenings.
Frozen fruit works brilliantly here – it’s still nutrient rich, easy to store and helps keep the cost down. Or use whatever fruits you already have in the fridge or freezer. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries all taste delicious in crumble.
I often serve this with my sugar free banana custard from the same book. Natural yoghurt (or a natural plant-based yoghurt alternative) also works really well.
Ingredients (makes 4 with leftovers)
- 2 large eating apples 350g
- 250g frozen forest fruits such as blueberries, blackberries and raspberries
- 1 orange, juiced or 40ml apple or orange juice
- 150g cold unsalted butter cut into cubes or dairy free alternative
- 150g wholemeal plain flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 200g oats
- 50g milled seeds such as pumpkin or sunflower
- 50g golden caster sugar, (optional add on for older children and adults)
- 100g marzipan, coarsely grated (optional add on for older children and adults)
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200°C or 180°C fan.
- Peel the apples and coarsely grate them, leaving the core behind. Add them to a 20 x 25cm ovenproof dish with the frozen fruit and the orange juice. Mix well.
- Add the butter, flour and cinnamon to a large bowl. Pulse with a hand blender until you have a breadcrumb texture or rub together with your fingertips to create small crumbs.
- Stir in the oats and seeds. For a sweeter version, mix in the optional sugar and grated marzipan at this stage.
- Divide the topping into two portions. Spoon half over the fruit. Place the other half into a freezer bag for another time.
- Bake in the middle of the oven for about 30 minutes until the top is golden and the crumble smells delicious. Leave to cool slightly before serving.
