I’m a big advocate of cooking with kids when you get the chance and these simple cinnamon and raisin bagels are a great recipe to make with them.
I’ve been loving the simple recipes for making bread that are popular on tik tok and Instagram right now and they are perfect, easy ways to offer quick and healthy options to kids, especially if you can top them with some nutrient-rich toast toppings, so I thought I would make my own Christmas inspired ones.
These are so simple and so fun to make too.
You can also adapt them easily – leaving the raisins out, swapping for cranberries or leaving them whole for older kids. You could also experiment with different spices or have different options sprinkled on top.
In this recipe I’ve suggested sprinkling them with poppy or sesame seeds or to just serve them plain. The cinnamon and raisins add lovely sweetness and they taste so delicious toasted. My kids are a HUGE fan of bagels and this is a really easy, non-processed version for babies and toddlers.
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
Makes: 6
Ingredients
- 50g raisins
- 200g self-raising flour (plus extra for flouring)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 240g Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp olive oil or sunflower oil, plus extra to brush over (you can also use an egg wash too to add a bit more “glaze” to these. We used olive oil to keep it vegan.)
- A teaspoon or two of poppy or sesame seeds to sprinkle over the top
Method
- Preheat the oven to 190C/170 fan/gas mark 5 and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
- Soak the raisins in hot water for 5 minutes then drain and roughly chop.
- Add the flour, cinnamon, yogurt, oil and chopped raisins to a mixing bowl and stir together to form a dough.
- Knead on a well-floured worktop for 3 minutes. You might need to add extra flour if your dough is still quite sticky, it varies), then roll into a log shape and slice into 6 roughly equal pieces with a knife.
- Roll each piece into a ball, flatten slightly then poke a hole through the centre with your fingers to form bagels.
- Pop on your prepared tray and brush with a little extra oil. Sprinkle with poppy seeds and/or sesame seeds.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Best served toasted and spread with butter.
These also work with gluten free flour too. I haven’t yet tried them with dairy free yogurt, but if you choose a DF thick yogurt, it should work.
