With no added sugar or salt, apple and raisin
This baby scone recipe is a simple, family-friendly recipe that works brilliantly as a snack for babies and toddlers (and even adults enjoy them too). They’re ideal for days when you want something quick to make and easy to pack for outings or for lunchboxes or after-school snacks.
These baby scones contain no added salt and no added sugar, so they make an ideal food for babies and children of all ages. You can bake these as mini scones (around 14) or make 7–8 larger scones, depending on the size of your cutter. They’re quick, straightforward and a really handy option to have up your sleeve, and in your freezer!
Ingredients:
- 230g / 8oz self-raising flour (try half wholemeal and half white flour)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 60g / 2oz low-salt soft butter / vegan spread
- 1 small apple, grated
- 1 large handful of raisins, soaked or well chopped
- A few splashes of milk or plant-based drink (to get the right consistency)
Optional: Blueberry chai ‘jam’
- 3 small handfuls blueberries
- 1½ tsp chia seeds
- 3-6 tbsp water
Method:
- Sift half wholemeal self-raising flour and half white self-raising flour into a bowl.
- Add the baking powder and mix well.
- Rub the butter into the mixture with your fingers until combined (it will still be fairly dry at this stage).
- Stir in the grated apple and sultanas and mix well.
- Add enough milk to make a dough—not too wet, but sticky enough to bind the ingredients into a ball.
- Roll out the dough to around 2cm thick.
- Use a glass or round cutter to cut out scone shapes.
- Transfer to a baking tray and bake in a hot oven (220°C) for 10–15 minutes.
- Serve the scones warm or cooled with fresh fruit, natural yoghurt or a spoonful of the blueberry chia jam.

To make the blueberry chia jam:
- This goes wonderfully with this baby scone recipe: Add the blueberries and water to a small saucepan and cook over a low heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries soften and begin to burst.
- Mash lightly with a fork, then stir in the chia seeds.
- Leave to cool and thicken for 10-15 minutes before serving.
