Only 4 Ingredients
These easy pea fritters have just 4 ingredients and are a simple savoury option for babies and young children, and a favourite of mine.
Made with just peas, egg, flour and cheese, they offer protein, calcium and iron, alongside fibre from the peas. Peas are a great ingredient to include for little ones as they also provide plant based protein, iron and a range of vitamins to support growth and development. These fritters are great on their own or served with yogurt, dips or some veg sticks for a more balanced meal or snack. For younger babies, you can cut up the fritters into finger-sized strips.
You can double up the recipe to batch cook and keep some in the freezer for busy days. You can also tweak them depending on what you have at home, adding herbs or extra veggies to mix things up.
Ingredients
- 100g peas (about 1 generous handful)
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp plain flour
- 40g Cheddar cheese (about ½ cup / 1 small handful), grated
Method
- Cook the peas
Boil the peas in a small pan of water for 2–3 minutes until soft. Drain well and allow to cool slightly. - Mash the peas
Add the cooked peas to a bowl and mash with a fork until mostly broken down (a little texture is great). - Mix the batter
Crack in the egg, then add the flour and grated cheese. Mix well to form a thick batter. - Cook the fritters
Heat a little oil (~1 tbsp) in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Spoon the mixture into the pan and gently flatten. - Flip and cook
Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through. - Cool and serve
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Optional Herby Yoghurt Dip
Mix together:
- 2 tbsp plain yogurt
- 1 tbsp finely chopped herbs such as parsley, chives or mint
- A squeeze of lemon juice (optional)
Stir well and serve alongside the fritters for dipping.
